The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones Notes, Outline, and Rough Draft.

This time I did things differently. I learned a new technique called TREX which stands for thesis, reasons, evidence, and explanation. I came up with three things for each thing. This was a very helpful way of prepping for an essay. I was able to online and have notes in a very organized way. However, I think I like the way I normally organize my essay. It may be because I have been doing it the same way since I learned to write an essay. Nonetheless, I will be incorporating this method into my own in the future. As you can see I also decided to try and take all my notes and outlines on Microsoft One Note to go paperless.

Here are some more notes and part of my rough draft. I had a hard time writing this particular essay because argumentative essays are not my strong suit. I was quite nervous about writing this essay. Also, I had a hard time making sure that I was giving the other side a fair fight. I did have quite a bit of fun writing this despite the nerves. I love music and am a huge nerd when it comes to it. I have seen countless documentaries and read countless articles about The Beatles so as you can see I am very passionate about the topic which I think helped me with this essay. I also was very lucky that many credible sources seem to be interested in this topic as well as leaving me with an ample amount of information to use.

The Beatles is the greatest rock ‘n roll band, not The Rolling Stones.
 Notes:
-"In popular music, the Beatles are the gold standard. Every band that gains both critical and public acclaim inevitably is compared to the Beatles." https://www.enotes.com/topics/beatles
-The Beatles were an English Rock band that was formed in Liverpool in 1960. The band consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the dominate songwriters and singers while George Harrison was more of a secondary songwriter and singer. The Beatles soon grew in popularity especially in America once they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. The phenomenon erupted in the United States which provoked a so-called British Invasion of Beatles imitators from the United Kingdom. Between 1962 and 1970 The Beatles released 12 studio albums (13 worldwide), 13 extended plays (EPs) and 22 singles.
-"The Rolling Stones are an English Rock band formed in London in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of the bandleader Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Ian Stewart. The primary songwriters were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The Rolling Stones were at the frontline of the British Invasion that was insanely popular in the United States in 1964. There youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s was iconic. The band started out singing covers and even singing some things The Beatles had written for them. Eventually, they started writing there own music which brought them more success. For instance, Paint It Black and ( I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. The Rolling Stones albums consist of, The Rolling Stones (1964), 12 x 5 ( 1964), Rolling Stones No. 2 (1965), The Rolling Stones Now (1965), Out of Our Heads (1965), December's Children (and everybody's) (1965), Aftermath (1966), Between the Buttons (1967), Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967), Beggars Banquet (1968), Let it Bleed (1969), Sticky Fingers (1971), Exile on Main St. (1972),  Goats Head Soup (1973), It's Only Rock 'n Roll (1974), Black and Blue (1976), Some Girls (1978), Emotional Rescue (1980), Tattoo You (1981), Undercover (1983), Dirty Work (1986), Steel Wheels (1989), Voodoo Lounge (1994), Bridges to Babylon (1997), A Bigger Bang (2005), and Blue and Lonesome (2016). As you can see The Rolling Stones have been a band for a while as well as coming out with many albums from 1964 to 2016. Although The Beatles only came out with 12 albums they had come out with them, not with a span of several decades like The Rolling Stones but instead between 1963 to 1970. The age-old debate is who is the best Rock 'n Roll band? The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? In this essay, we will explore why The Beatles are a more legendary rock band than The Rolling Stones and how The Beatles are the most innovative, inspiring, and everlasting band.

T (Thesis):  The Beatles are a more legendary rock band than The Rolling Stones because The Beatles are the most innovative, inspiring, and everlasting band,

R (Reasons): 1) The Beatles were the most innovative band. They reinvented American FM radio, they printed lyrics on the album, chart success, live global television broadcast, a self-contained record label, stadium concert venues, concept albums, music videos, and The Beatles (and their recording engineers) either pioneered or popularized Artificial Double Tracking (ADT), backmasking, tuned feedback, spliced audio loops, distortion, equalization, stereo effects, multi-tracking (overdubbing), compression, phase shifting, and innovative “microphoning". While they did not necessarily create all of these things listed above they did, however, make it extremely popular just like their mohair suits. "The Stones pioneered home-recording and the use of a mobile recording rig developed a trademark logo that didn’t even include their name, reveled in being punks and rebels, did rock’s first unplugged (basically) album (“Beggar’s Banquet”), was the first group without their name on a record (in 1964), first to incorporate modern design into their record sleeves (with the 3D on Their Satanic Majesty’s Request and the zipper on Sticky Fingers), staged the first festival show headlined by a single group (OK it ended badly, but still), released the first rock live album to receive the same acclaim as a studio efforts (Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out),  and had their own list of studio innovations though mostly for the type of instruments used (electric pianos, marimbas)." While they are both innovative bands The Beatles were the first to do many things that made an enormous impact. Bands are doing stadium concerts, concept albums music videos, and all of the many different audio techniques.

2)The Beatles inspired more people than The Rolling Stones.
Imagining Rock 'n Roll without The Beatles is nearly impossible. Bob Dylan said, “We were driving through Colorado, we had the radio on, and eight of the Top 10 songs were Beatles songs…’ I Wanna Hold Your Hand,’ all those early ones. They were doing things nobody was doing. Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid… I knew they were pointing the direction of where music had to go.” (Daniel Wheway. “From Me To You: The Beatles Chart Book 1962-2016: NOOK Book.” Barnes & Noble, Daniel Wheway, 7 Feb. 2017,) Even Bob Dylan knew that they were not only reinventing music but they were inspirational to him and many others. While The Rolling Stones have inspired multiple bands as well, they just aren't able to beat The Beatles. While they are a band that is still very popular and inspirational they didn't reinvent music like The Beatles did. They changed the whole scene for everyone. They even set it up for The Rolling Stones by not only paving the way for them but actually writing the songs at the beginning of there career.

3)The Beatles were only together for eight years, but they have maintained a hold on every generation that has followed.

Here is my final rough draft of the essay that I turned in to my Professor. I ended up just copying and pasting the notes and outline up above onto Pages. I then started adding and deleting until I ended up with this.

The Beatles is the greatest rock ‘n roll band, not The Rolling Stones.

The Beatles were an English Rock band that was formed in Liverpool in 1960. The band consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star. John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the dominant songwriters and singers while George Harrison was more of a secondary songwriter and singer. The Beatles soon grew in popularity especially in America once they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Rolling Stones are an English Rock band that was formed in London in 1962. The first stable line-up of the band consisted of the bandleader Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Ian Stewart. The main songwriters were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The Rolling Stones were at the frontline of the British Invasion that was popular in the United States in 1964. Their youthful and rebellious counterculture of the 1960s was unmatched. The band started out singing covers and even singing some things The Beatles had written for them. Eventually, they started writing their music which brought them more success. For instance, Paint It Black and ( I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. The age-old debate is who is the best rock 'n roll band? Unlike sports, there are no points that can be won or ties that can be broken. This leads us to the question, who is the best rock ’n roll band The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? In this essay, we will explore why The Beatles are a more legendary rock band than The Rolling Stones and how The Beatles are the most innovative, inspiring, and everlasting band.
The Beatles reinvented American FM radio, they printed lyrics on the album, chart success, live global television broadcast, a self-contained record label, stadium concert venues, concept albums, music videos, and The Beatles (as well as their recording engineers) either pioneered or popularized Artificial Double Tracking, backmasking, stereo effects, tuned feedback, spliced audio loops, equalization, distortion, multi-tracking (overdubbing), compression, phase shifting, and innovative “microphoning". While they did not necessarily create all of these things listed above they did, however, make it popular just like there mohair suites. The Stones instituted home-recording and the use of a mobile recording rig, developed a trademark logo that didn’t include their name, celebrated in being rebels, did rock’s first unplugged album (“Beggar’s Banquet”), were the first group without their name on a record (in 1964), first to incorporate modern design into their record sleeves (with the 3D on Their Satanic Majesty’s Request and the zipper on Sticky Fingers), staged the first festival show headlined by a single group (OK it ended badly, but still), and had their list of studio innovations though mostly for the type of instruments used (electric pianos, marimbas)." While they are both innovative bands The Beatles were the first to do many things that made an enormous impact. They precisely reinvented music forever. The Rolling Stones simply were a product of The Beatle's success and influence. Although they did have some of their innovations it doesn’t even come close to what The Beatles ever did.
Their chords were outrageous, just outrageous, and their harmonies made it all valid… I knew they were pointing the direction of where music had to go.” (Fleming 2019) Even Bob Dylan knew that they were not only reinventing music but they were inspirational to him and many others. While The Rolling Stones have inspired multiple bands as well, they just aren't able to beat The Beatles. While they are a band that is still very popular and inspirational they didn't reinvent music as The Beatles did. They changed the whole scene for everyone. They even set it up for The Rolling Stones by not only paving the way for them but writing them their first hit that sum started the beginning of their career.
The Beatles were only together for eight years, but they have maintained a hold on every generation that has followed. Between 1962 and 1970 The Beatles released 12 studio albums (13 worldwide), 13 extended plays (EPs) and 22 singles. Not to mention transform the entire music world and even start a phenomenon called the British Invasion. The Rolling Stones albums consist of, 30 studio albums and 28 live albums. Their albums stretch from 1964 to 2019. As you can see The Rolling Stones have been a band for a while as well as coming out with many albums from 1964 to 2019. Although The Beatles only came out with 12 albums they had come out with them, not within a span of several decades like The Rolling Stones but instead between 1963 to 1970. The Beatles valued quality over quantity. This is one of the reasons why they have maintained a hold on every generation that has followed, unlike The Rolling Stones. The Beatles were the voice of generations. The Narrative Now says, “Their lyrics have been mentioned in rap songs, their songs have been covered by a numerous amount of people, and their fans lie from the hardcore rocker to the casual six-year-old who hears his father play a couple of tunes. The Beatles are more than a group, they were pioneers of authentic quirkiness within music which helped in the development of the personal and unique sound of the artists we know today.”(Conley 2019) The Beatles have inspired everyone from heavy metal enthusiasts to a six-year-old. Their music is timeless and is gripping to every generation. The Rolling Stones is also timeless however their music doesn’t reach a wide variety of people. How often do you hear a six-year-old mention The Rolling Stones? Not very often. Because of the variety of people that The Beatles draw in their music can maintain a hold on every generation.
The Beatles were the most innovative and influential band. The Beatles pioneered achievements that paved the way for others like The Rolling Stone. The Beatles have inspired multiple generations and even remarkable artists that we have today. They entirely transformed music with their different techniques and experimental sound. They have held a hold on every single generation that has followed. The Rolling Stones although a great band and most definitely one of the best is simply not the greatest Rock ’n Roll band but the second-best. The Rolling Stones did a lot of incredible things for music and people but anything they have ever done does not come near to what The Beatles have accomplished. The Beatles is the greatest Rock ’n Roll band to ever exist.

After turning in my essay I got some feedback from my professor.

Avery -- This is a good argument! You made some great points and supported them with credible evidence. I made some notes in the paper in case you want to revise it. Keep up the good writing!

Comment Summary (Page 4 of 4.)

Work Cited (Page 3 of 4)

This essay was very hard for me to write. I have always had a hard time writing argumentative essays. I think I also struggled to try to fit in everything I wanted to say. I am very passionate about music and know a lot about The Beatles and The Rolling Stones so I think throughout the essay I didn't organize my thoughts as well. Also, I tried out some new things in this essay. I tried out TREX and going paperless. If you read the comment summary you will see it mentions in-text citation once again. I can't explain how frustrating that word has been for me! When will I get it right? It has been maddening! Amongst all the reading and Youtube videos I somehow have still gotten it wrong once again. However, I think I will get it right the next time I need to use it. Let us cross our fingers.

Here are the Assignment #3 Peer Review questions:
1) Does this paper have a clear argument? Is the thesis stated clearly in the first paragraph? Is there something the writer could do to clarify their argument?
2) Are the writer's points supported by evidence? How do you know the evidence is from credible sources?
3) Do you believe this argument effectively persuades its audience? Is there something the writer could do to make it more effective?
4) Does this argument include a correctly formatted Works Cited page and in-text citations?

Peer Review answers:

1) The argument is clearly stated in the opening paragraph, as well as the title of the paper.
2) Yes, there are many credible sources used within the paper and listed on the works cited page.
3) I felt that all the elements of a good, solid argument were present. The only thing I would note is that the opening paragraph could have incorporated less about general knowledge of both bands and got to the main argument a bit sooner.
4) I believe the formatting and placement of the sources could be a bit different, but other than that it looks correct.

Great job Avery!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your argument :) And while I do like both The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, I would have to agree with your argument, The Beatles are the best!
